Ground broken on affordable homes in Toronto's Trinity-Bellwoods neighbourhood

Toronto, Ontario, August 24, 2026 — Through Build Canada Homes, Government of Canada is taking action to increase housing supply and accelerate the construction of affordable homes for Canadians.

Today, MP Danielle Martin joined Olivia Chow, Mayor of Toronto and City of Toronto representatives to mark the groundbreaking of 1113-1125 Dundas Street West, a new rental housing development in Toronto's Trinity-Bellwoods neighbourhood and the first project to advance to construction under Build Canada Homes' partnership with the City of Toronto, which is helping accelerate housing construction on City-owned land across the city.

Supported through Build Canada Homes and the City of Toronto's Toronto Builds program, the development will deliver 74 rent-controlled rental homes, including 17 affordable homes. Located at Dundas Street West and Ossington Avenue, the project will transform a former municipal parking lot into a sustainable, mixed-income rental community, demonstrating how public land can be repurposed to create housing that serves generations of Torontonians.

More than 40 per cent of the homes will be family-sized two- and three-bedroom units, helping meet the needs of families looking to remain in complete, transit-connected communities. Upon completion, the building will be operated by a non-profit housing provider selected by the City of Toronto.

The development will also serve as a showcase for innovative approaches to housing delivery. As one of the projects highlighted under the Build Canada Homes partnership with the City of Toronto, it employs modern methods of construction (MMC), featuring mass-timber construction, geothermal energy and other low-carbon design elements that support both housing and climate objectives. These innovative construction methods can help reduce emissions, minimize construction waste and support faster housing delivery.

The project is being delivered by CreateTO on behalf of the City of Toronto and designed and constructed by an all-Canadian team that includes Moriyama Teshima Architects, Montgomery Sisam Architects and Pomerleau Construction. The development is one of nine projects advancing through the Build Canada Homes partnership with the City of Toronto, through which more than $310 million in federal funding is helping unlock nearly 1,900 rental homes– with more than 700 supportive and affordable – as well as more than 1,100 rent-controlled homes delivered by the non-market housing sector.
