Build Canada Homes accelerates housing on public lands

Toronto, Ontario, October 30, 2026 – Public lands are one of Canada's most powerful tools to increase housing supply, improve affordability and build complete communities. By combining these lands with the expertise, capital and innovation of development partners, Canada can deliver more homes, faster, where they are needed most.

Today, Build Canada Homes (BCH) is announcing the launch of its first Housing Development Opportunities by making 13 development-ready parcels available to support approximately 1,725 new homes, including at least 300 affordable homes, across four communities in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.

Making these parcels available supports Build Canada Homes’ mandate to unlock the housing potential of public lands and accelerate housing delivery across Canada. BCH is constantly moving sites from planning to implementation, creating opportunities for qualified development, non-profit and Indigenous partners to help deliver housing more quickly and efficiently.

As Canada's housing delivery partner, Build Canada Homes is taking a market-responsive approach that helps reduce barriers, attract investment and advance projects at speed. By connecting development-ready public lands with capable partners, Build Canada Homes is helping turn underutilized assets into new housing supply while maximizing public benefit for Canadians.

These initial opportunities are in four established and growing communities:

  • Currie, Calgary (6 opportunities)
  • Naawi-Oodena, Winnipeg (4 opportunities)
  • Village at Griesbach, Edmonton (2 opportunities)
  • Wateridge Village, Ottawa (1 opportunity)


Together, these opportunities will help increase housing supply in high-demand markets, support affordable and mixed-income housing outcomes, attract private and institutional investment, and create communities connected to jobs, services, transit and recreational amenities.

Beginning in November, Build Canada Homes will release a series of Housing Development Opportunities through its website, which will serve as the central hub for current and future opportunities. Build Canada Homes encourages interested development, non-profit and Indigenous partners to visit its website for more information on these opportunities, connect with BCH and help deliver more housing, faster, on public lands across Canada.

  • Build Canada Home's land activation pipeline includes 24 sites at this time representing more than 1,100 acres of land with housing development potential across Canada, that will generate more than 200 development parcels.

  • Development-ready parcels are sites where key planning, due diligence and site preparation activities have advanced sufficiently for BCH to bring them to market.
  • Additional Housing Development Opportunities are expected to be released as Build Canada Home continues advancing sites through planning, due diligence and market readiness.
